The far eastern frontier on the Lohit, with Dong Valley, Kibithoo and Kaho beyond.
Walong sits high on the Lohit in Anjaw district, close to the eastern extremity of India. It is remembered for the Battle of Walong in 1962, and the war memorial above the town is the focal point for most visitors.
Beyond Walong lie Dong Valley, often described as the first place in India to see the sunrise, and the frontier villages of Kibithoo and Kaho. Access to these requires specific permissions that are not automatic.

The road up the Lohit
From Tezu the road follows the Lohit gorge through Hayuliang and gains height slowly over long, slow sectors. This is our most demanding standard route and the one where map timings are least reliable.
