Most journeys beyond the Assam plains are better done in an SUV. Ground clearance matters more than horsepower on these roads, and luggage capacity matters more than either once you are travelling for a week.
We hire out three SUV classes with drivers: Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Scorpio and Toyota Innova Crysta. Which one we recommend depends on the specific sector and season, not on what is most expensive.
Choosing between the three
A short summary of how we allocate vehicles on real itineraries.
- Innova Crysta — best passenger comfort; good for Roing, Anini, Mechuka and Namsai in normal conditions
- Scorpio — strong hill ability with good comfort; good for Mayodia, Tezu and mixed itineraries
- Bolero — most robust on broken surfaces; preferred for Walong, Dong Valley and wet-season Dibang Valley
6 and 7 seater options
All three seat six or more on paper. For long mountain days we usually suggest booking to four or five passengers per vehicle, or taking two vehicles for a larger group, so that the trip stays comfortable rather than technically legal.

Frequently asked questions
- Which SUV is best for Anini?
- In dry conditions an Innova Crysta or Scorpio works well. In wet months or after road repairs we usually recommend a Bolero.
- Can two SUVs be arranged for a larger group?
- Yes. For groups above six we normally quote two vehicles travelling together.
