Margherita and neighbouring Ledo form the coal and wartime heart of Upper Assam. This is where the Ledo Road — the Stilwell Road — began its route towards Burma and China, and where the coalfield history of the region is still visible in the landscape.
It is also the access area for Singpho villages and their distinctive tea culture, which makes this a richer day out than the map suggests.
